MABSCOTT W.Va. (Hinton News) – Classic Hits 98.3FM, the Summers County-based radio station, began a Teacher of the Month contest to celebrate teaching professionals in Southern West Virginia. Recently, the first recipient of the award, Diana Lilly, spoke about receiving the honor. Diana is a fourth-grade teacher at Mabscott Elementary School. She studied early education at Concord University.

According to Lilly, she wasn’t aware she had been nominated, so it was a shock to learn of winning. She called it “A sweet surprise.”

When asked what made her want to become a teacher, Lilly stated, “I knew at an early age that I wanted to be a teacher to make a difference in students’ lives. I had a few wonderful teachers who left a positive mark on my life, and I knew I wanted to do the same for any student that crossed my path.”

Lilly went on to explain that math is her absolute favorite subject to teach, and her best advice for other teachers is to maintain positivity.

That positive attitude shines through in conversations with this dedicated woman who obviously loves her job and the children she teaches.

She went on to say that a teacher may be the only positive influence a child sees during the day, so she wants to try and stay positive. Diana also feels that students learn best from someone they know they can trust and who cares about them.

When discussing what motivated her to be a teacher, Lilly said, “I stay motivated by wanting to make a difference for my students and getting to celebrate their successes with them.

Also, having an amazing work family at Mabscott Elementary who truly cares about our students. Surrounding myself with wonderful teachers keeps me going.”

The children in Diana Lilly’s classroom are fortunate to have an incredible teacher. Congratulations to Lilly for being Teacher of the Month and for everything she does to help her students succeed.

According to a recent press release from Classic Hits 98.3FM, “At Classic Hits 98.3FM, the staff believes in the power of recognition and the effect it can have on educators and their communities.”
