Moncove Lake State Park, located in Gap Mills on the Eastern edge of West Virginia, is worth the drive to Monroe County.
Created in 1960 by damming Devil Creek, the lake sits within the 250-acre state park, with a 500-acre wildlife management area adjoining the site. The name comes from combining “Mon” for Monroe County with “cove,” referring to the small valley the dam created. The park originated from land purchased in 1958 as part of the Moncove Lake Hunting and Fishing Area; in 1991, 250 acres were designated for a state park, while the remaining lands remain under wildlife management.
A year-round centerpiece for anglers and outdoor enthusiasts, the lake supports a diverse fishery, including largemouth bass, bluegill, trout, catfish, walleye and yellow perch. A West Virginia fishing license is required.
Nearby trails weave through woodlands, offering scenic overlooks and opportunities for wildlife viewing. The park emphasizes conservation and watershed education, connecting visitors with the region’s natural heritage.
Moncove Lake State Park offers five trails, most of them short, with the longest around two miles. Hikers can also enjoy the nearby Allegheny Trail along Peter’s Mountain if they wish to extend their hiking opportunities. Expect to see wildlife including whitetail deer, turkey, fox, squirrels, beavers, and more on the trails.
For many, Moncove Lake is a place to slow down and enjoy a simple walk or picnic by the water. If you’re in need of picnic supplies, the Cheese N’ More Store located in Sweet Springs Valley, Gap Mills, is a popular stop offering jams, spices, cheeses, deli meats, candy, nuts, and homemade sandwiches; it is open Monday through Saturday from 9 am to 5:30 pm.
Campground and boating options provide seasonally rich experiences. The campground opens in spring and remains through fall, weather permitting. Campers can enjoy fishing, boating, swimming, hiking and bird watching, with over 160 bird species to observe in the area. Seasonal rentals include rowboats, kayaks and paddleboats. Boating with personal watercraft is allowed, provided state regulations are followed and motors are under 5 horsepower. A boat ramp is available, and dry docking is permitted near the launch.
Campsites may be reserved April through October, with reservations accepted online, by phone, or at the campground office. For weekends, bookings require a minimum of two consecutive nights (Friday and Saturday) or one night for Sunday through Thursday; a 14-night maximum stay applies. The campground features 48 tent or camper sites, of which 34 have electric hookups. Onsite amenities include a dump station and a bathhouse with showers. Firewood is available for purchase.
