HINTON, W.Va. (The Hinton News) – One of southern West Virginia’s signature summer celebrations is set to return later this month as the 2026 West Virginia State Water Festival brings a full week of entertainment, recreation, and community events to Hinton. The annual festival celebrates the region’s rich connection to the New and Greenbrier rivers while offering activities for residents and visitors of all ages.
The festival is in its 61st year and will feature live music, food vendors, community events, outdoor recreation, arts and crafts, family activities and several special events spread throughout the week. Organizers have also expanded this year’s lineup with new attractions designed to showcase Hinton’s scenic waterfront and encourage visitors to experience the area’s natural beauty.
One of the newest additions to this year’s festival is the inaugural Kayak Race on the New River. Scheduled for Sunday, Aug. 2, participants will launch from the confluence of the Greenbrier and New rivers in Hinton before paddling to Bateau Beach. Registration begins at noon, with the race starting at 2 p.m. The event carries a $10 entry fee, and competitors will have the opportunity to win cash prizes ranging from $50 to $100. Organizers remind participants that all river safety rules must be followed throughout the race.
Music will once again be a centerpiece of the festival with performances scheduled throughout the week at Rivertown Stage on the corner of Second Avenue and Ballengee Street. Entertainment includes The Dynamic Duo on Wednesday, July 29, Matt Mullins on Thursday, July 30, The Holler Generals on Friday, July 31, and performances by Jonah Carden and Nathan Seldomridge on Saturday, Aug. 1.
Several community organizations will also be participating in the festivities. The Summers County Humane Society will host an adoption event during Rally on the River on Wednesday, July 29, from 5 to 9 p.m. at Bateau Beach. Visitors will have the opportunity to meet adoptable dogs while enjoying food trucks, music and family-friendly activities.
The festival will also include a Sensory Swim on Thursday, July 30, from noon until 6 p.m. The event is designed to provide a calm and welcoming and environment for individuals and families who benefit from a sensory-friendly setting. Registration is required, and attendance will be limited to registered participants.
Art enthusiasts will have the opportunity to enjoy the Friends of the Library Art Show at the Summers County Public Library. Artwork will be displayed throughout the duration of the Water Festival from July 25 through Aug. 2 and will showcase a variety of artistic mediums including photography, painting, sculpture, woodworking, fiber art and more. An awards reception is scheduled for Thursday, July 30, from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m.
In addition to the featured events, visitors can expect the return of many longtime favorites, including live entertainment, local food and craft vendors, educational exhibits, water recreation, family activities and the popular Fireman’s Parade, which has become one of the festival’s favorite traditions. The grand parade will commence on August 1.
With activities taking place throughout the week, organizers hope the 2026 West Virginia State Water Festival will once again bring together residents, former community members, and visitors from across the region to celebrate Hinton’s rivers, history, and community spirit.
Whether attending a concert, paddling the New River, browsing local artwork or simply spending time with family downtown, the festival offers something for everyone to enjoy during one of Summers County’s biggest annual celebrations.
