HINTON W.Va. (Hinton News) – The people at Ascension Episcopal Church had a vision. As is often the case, these visions can take a while to become a reality.
Behind this historic church which was founded in 1874, there was a house for the rector. It was a very old house, which the people of the church could not afford to keep up to safety standards.
They envisioned doing something more beautiful, more useful and more in line with what the church is to be about in the world. Specifically, they wanted to build a space where people in the community could come together. They envisioned it being a safe place and a place of love and acceptance. Also a place for gatherings, learning and fun!
That was two years ago, and there were complications along the way. Yet good things take time. Now it begins to take shape. Benches have been placed and fruit trees planted between the sidewalk and the road that faces Fifth Avenue. Members of the church used the old foundation rocks from the original house to build a circular patio with steps leading from the church to the patio. They marked off space at the end of the lot for parking for those who use the church and the space.
It begins to take shape. There is more to come. Church members want to add flowers, bushes, trees and seating. That will all come about later. For now, the space is usable and people in the community are welcomed to use it. An evening with a cook out and remembrances on Sept. 11 will be coming up soon.
In the meantime, the space was blessed by Bishop Cowden after worship on Aug. 13. Our hope is that it will also be a blessing to you!
