Space Force has plucked its first guardian from West Virginia to join the technical and intelligence branch of the U.S. military.
Air Force recruiter for southern West Virginia Tech Sgt. Franco Pace, says Michael Hoosier, 19, from Wyoming County, placed very high in the ASVAB (the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery Test), which tests general, intellectual, mechanics and electrical aptitude. He aced his physical and taken his oath of enlistment to join at the Beckley Military Entrance Processing Station.
Hoosier has been guaranteed a job as Operations Intelligence, joining the intelligence community to handle and transfer technical data for the Space Force.
Pace told The Hinton News said “this is an amazing opportunity for Hoosier. All I did was open the door for the opportunity.”
The new branch of the United States Armed Services is something both he and Hoosier are very excited about. Hoosier’s job as guardian first sends him to Texas for basic training at Lockland Air Force Base in San Antonio for 7½ weeks and then he will go straight into his technical training.
Hoosier attended Westside High School trade school in Wyoming County and studied robots, electronics and drone technology. According to the Facebook page for AF Recruiting in Beckley, he also attended the Wyoming County Career and Technical Center where he earned a certification in Electronics Technology and Robotics. He leaves for basic training at the end of March.
“I had no idea being recruited for Space Force was a big as it is,” Hoosier said. “I tested well, but there was another recruit who received an ASVAN score higher than mine, like 98. That student studied computer science.”
