Hinton is preparing to install a new green space in the area. This space will hold a play area for children and raised planting spaces for the community’s senior citizens. After several years of working towards this goal, the project is officially moving forward.
A ground-breaking ceremony was held on April 4 to kick off the project. Representatives from the funding partners, community leaders, and citizens lined the sidewalk to celebrate the moment. Project leader Shalom Tazewell spoke about the process she and many others have gone through to bring this project to fruition.
Multiple groups, organizations, leaders and individuals are part of the project in one way or another. For example, the Eades family donated the property. Also, organizations such as Active Southern West Virginia, Hinton Area Foundation and AARP all provided funding and resources. The City of Hinton and the Summers County Commission are also among those involved. The list of contributors goes on.
The playground portion of the green space will have multiple activities for children. Items that will adorn the play area will include a train that kids can climb on. This addition is particularly apropos due to the city’s long and storied history with the railroad.
In addition to the play area, the space will include raised beds where seniors are invited to grow plants of their choosing. The combination green space provides a unique opportunity for the older and younger generations to interact. Children will have opportunities to learn about growing and harvesting from older generations.
Watch for progress over the coming months as teams set to work building the playground and gardening area.
