ROOF ON A STOOP
The City of Hinton has demolished three condemned houses affected by a landslide on Temple Street at 10th and 11th avenues several years ago. Numerous houses were destroyed and removed shortly after they twisted and slid down the hill toward Hinton’s main thoroughfare along Route 20.
Other affected houses left standing since the catastrophe have continued to shift and buckle along with sections of sidewalk and retaining walls. A community effort to remove “bad buildings” too far gone to stabilize or repair are being assessed and on a list for removal. Davie Madison oversees the city’s dilapidated buildings removal efforts. He says another recent slide required the city to respond immediately by razing the three houses over the past week or so. Another stretch of dilapidated houses neighboring the historic toll house along Temple Street across from the bridge over the New River heading into Hinton have also been reduced to rubble in recent months.
