HINTON W.Va. (Hinton News) – I haven’t been able to find out much about it over the years, which I find unusual for a business of the 1900s that carried “Hinton” within its name. This Hinton Furniture Company advertising thermometer came from Robert Lindsay’s estate at the top of Bacon’s Mountain on the other side of Talcott.
Granddad, Bernard Thompson, and I worked for two days going through an outbuilding of Mr. Lindsay’s where he had tons of local pieces on display years ago. Granddad and I sorted the pieces to get them ready for an auction to be conducted by Riverbend Auction Company. This was one of the pieces I got to add to my collection.
It is a wooden advertising thermometer for the Hinton Furniture Company that reads: “Dependable Home Furnishings” Phone 22 Hinton W.VA. The earliest reference to it is this ad I found in The Hinton Daily News from Tuesday, April 5, 1938. I ran across several in the 1940s and 50s. The latest I could find was one from The Hinton Daily News, Tuesday, June 14, 1960.
But I have yet to uncover an address for where the business was in Hinton, or who its owners were. If it simply went out of business, or if another one acquired it as they so often did. I am sorry this piece lacks much information, but it is such an unusual piece in my collection. If you happen to know anything about this company, please email me at greenbrierantiques@gmail.com.
