Summers County suffered a 56-51 defeat to James Monroe on Wednesday night.

LINDISDE- The Summers County Lady Bobcats played about as well as one would hope after walking into a hornet’s nest–or the Jungle, as the Mavs call it–in Lindside to face the James Monroe Lady Mavericks.

James Monroe (19-3), coming off an unfathomable 96-9 victory over Bluefield in a game that saw Mya Dunlap score 50 points, was riding high with a state tournament berth on the line.

After a hard-fought back-and-forth contest, the Bobcats suffered a close 56-51 loss and ended their season with a respectable 13-8 record.

The Bobcats cut the Maverick lead to just 50-49 midway through the fourth, but James Monroe’s poise down the stretch allowed them to move on to the state tournament in Charleston where they will be the 5-seed next week.

Avery Lilly scored a team-high 16 points for Summers County. Abigayle Persinger added 12.

For James Monroe, all-stater Maggie Boroski scored 22 points and Dunlap contributed 18.
