Peterstown American Legion Kicks Off Membership Drive

PETERSTOWN W.Va. (Hinton News) – The Peterstown Rowe-Jones American Legion Post 145 recently launched a recruitment drive to increase membership.

The recruitment drive seeks to rouse interest in the American Legion and to make veterans in the surrounding areas aware of the American Legion Post in Peterstown.

“We encourage veterans to join the American Legion,” said Bridget Larew, commander of the Peterstown post. “We also want to make local veterans aware that there is an American Legion post here in Peterstown.”

The American Legion offers veterans the opportunity not only to meet and mingle with fellow veterans but also to assist and contribute to the community.

“For example, the Peterstown American Legion has in the past contributed scholarships to James Monroe High School students and helped to maintain flag poles at local cemeteries.

“We have an annual Fourth of July Picnic, and we are now planning to hold a community dance,” she said. “With other similar activities we hope to raise funds that will help us with our community programs.

“We have an honor guard that works together with other honor guards at patriotic events and at funerals for veterans,” said Larew.

Larew explained that some veterans may not be aware of the Peterstown American Legion. “One new member told us that he had been living in Red Sulphur Springs for over 25 years and never knew there was an American Legion post nearby in Peterstown,” she said.

Larew noted some communities, such as Hinton and Lindside, do not have an American Legion post. “We want these communities – including others in Monroe County and surrounding counties – to be aware of the Peterstown American Legion post.”

Veterans who served at least one day of active military duty during wartime, or are currently now serving, are potentially eligible for membership. Members must have been honorably discharged or are still serving honorably.

“There are a number of other American Legion Posts in the general area, and we encourage veterans to join them,” said Larew. “If the Peterstown American Legion Post 145 is nearby, we encourage veterans to come check us out. No invitation is necessary, just walk in and join us at one of our monthly meetings.”

The Peterstown American Legion currently has 22 members. Meetings are generally preceded with a social hour, 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., immediately followed by the official business meeting.

The Peterstown Rowe-Jones American Legion Post 145 meets every second Thursday of the month at the Sun Fresh Market, 216 Market Street, Peterstown, WV.

For additional information call Commander Bridget Larew at telephone number 412-759-1908 or Post Adjunct Todd Fairchild at telephone number 732-812-7268.
