The Dumpster Monster Arrives

SUMMERS COUNTY W.Va. (Hinton News) – Pen & Possum Productions, LLC, announces the arrival of a new children’s picture book, The Dumpster Monster. Story idea and character by Lieschen Kula, Lillian Kula, and Ted Kula, written by Cheryl Kula, and illustrated by Mary Turner.

While still in the midst of the pandemic, one evening, the Kula family sat on the porch overlooking the WV mountains and played a game, where they created a story character. He was a monster who lived in a dumpster and liked Chinese food. He was called Dude (although there was some argument over whether he should be called Bill). Now, Dude liked his home, but he was a bit lonely and wanted a friend. So, he sent a letter.

Eventually, the story about Dude was written and put on a shelf along with other projects, until Mary Turner offered to illustrate it. Finally, The Dumpster Monster became a reality.

Lieschen Kula and Lillian Kula are students attending Summers County Comprehensive High School and daughters of Ted Kula, Summers County Commissioner, and Cheryl Kula, local author by night, and instructional designer by day.

Mary Turner is a graphic designer and illustrator studying at Marietta College for her bachelor’s in graphic design. Ever since she could pick up a pencil, she would doodle and draw her family, friends, and her favorite characters. Now, she loves drawing anime, drawing cartoons, and painting landscapes such as the gorgeous scenery of West Virginia.

The Dumpster Monster is currently available on Kindle. Print version will be released in April 2024.  Want a signed copy? Visit on July 20 at the Friends of the Library Book Signing event.

Summers County Humane Society/ACWP volunteer Martha Braswell receives a grant from the Hinton Area Foundation’s Greg Vandall (left) for $1500 to support K900 field trips to take a van full of dogs to a local park, on a designated day, in the hopes of drawing out new volunteers to come and meet the dogs and give them some exercise. Christina Cochran (right) explained, “It’s hoped these field trips will result in some new volunteers for the humane society, some happy pups, and more community awareness of what we do. The funding will offset the cost of gas to get the dogs back and forth, as well as lunch and other supplies for the volunteers.  There will be future details on this program and when the first dog walks will be."
