WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS W.Va. (Hinton News) – Carter Bank & Trust of Virginia recently placed a legal notice in the Charleston Gazette-Mail announcing an auction set to take place on March 5 at the Greenbrier County Courthouse which would include Greenbrier Sporting Club lots. According to reports, the bank is attempting to recover more than $300 million in unpaid business loans.
The property in question, the Greenbrier Sporting Club, is part of The Greenbrier Resort, which Justice purchased out of bankruptcy in 2009. Additionally, it is a private equity club and residential community that initially opened in 2000.
Justice revealed that he is personally responsible for $368 million of remaining debt to Carter Bank during a 2021 lawsuit he and his companies filed against that bank. The lawsuit was eventually dismissed; however, another one was filed in November 2023.
According to a report from the Associated Press, attorneys for the Justice family are now seeking to block the sale of the property. On Wednesday, Feb. 7, a complaint was filed seeking an injunction to stop the auction.
The West Virginia Daily News will continue to follow this situation and provide updates as they become available.
