U.S. Senator Shelley Moore Capito visits Mon Health Medical Center in Morgantown, W.Va. on Thursday, October 15, 2026.

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (The Hinton News) – U.S. Senator Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.) traveled to Morgantown, W.Va. to attend an event focused on a recent Congressionally Directed Spending (CDS) award, as well as the investiture of President Michael T. Benson at West Virginia University (WVU).

First, Senator Capito attended an event to announce a nearly $5.5 million CDS award for Mon Health Medical Center that she secured in Fiscal Year 2026 (FY26). This funding will help improve critical infrastructure, including repairs to the roof, oiler, and overall building maintenance.

“It was great to be in Morgantown to celebrate this award for Mon Health Medical Center— an investment that represents a new chapter for Monongalia County and the surrounding area,” Senator Capito said. “Today’s event represents a significant investment in the health and well-being of all West Virginians.”

“Strong hospitals are essential to healthy communities, and investing in their infrastructure is an investment in West Virginia’s future. Senator Capito’s leadership in securing this funding for Mon Medical Center will help Vandalia Health advance our mission of providing quality care close to home. We appreciate her partnership in strengthening access to care across our state,” Jeff Sandene, President and CEO of Vandalia Health, said.

“This $5.485 million investment will help us make critical infrastructure upgrades that support the care our patients count on every day. We are grateful to Senator Capito for recognizing Vandalia Health Mon Medical Center’s importance to this community and securing funding that will strengthen our hospital for the patients, families and healthcare professionals who rely on it,” Krystal Atkinson, DNP, RN, CNOR, Senior Vice President of Vandalia Health, and Chief Administrative Officer of Mon Medical Center, said.

Next, Senator Capito attended the investiture of Michael T. Benson as WVU’s 27th president.

“I am so proud to be here today to commemorate President Benson’s investiture as the 27th President of West Virginia University,” Senator Capito said. “Today is a celebration of all that he has done and will continue to do during his time here in Morgantown. I have been proud to work with him on many projects and am looking forward to continuing our partnership for years to come.”
