WEST VIRGINIA (Hinton News) – Author Belinda Anderson’s annual March Madness writing workshop series for New River Community and Technical College continues with a new class dedicated to developing characters. The newest offering, “Magnificent March Madness: Chasing Characters,” begins March 7. This convenient conference call class focuses on the theme of creating magnificent characters that keep readers engaged.

“Magnificent characters, whether they are fictional or from real life, stay with you long after you have finished reading their stories,” Anderson said. “They are compelling in both their strengths and flaws.”

“Magnificent March Madness” meets at 10 a.m. Thursdays for three weeks through an audio-only conference call. The class can be accessed either through an internet conference call connection or by landline telephone – high-speed internet is not required. The hour-long classes will include lecture, with time for questions and participant sharing, and group e-mail follow-up. The workshop is open both to new and experienced writers.

Reviewers have commented on Anderson’s creation of memorable fictional characters. “Her strong characters linger in the mind,” wrote author Lee Smith.

Author Gretchen Moran Laskas noted, “Her characters aren’t afraid to take up residence in the reader’s mind and stay there.”

Anderson, who has a reporting background and writes nonfiction as well, also works with writers who want to write about the lives of others as a tribute to real-life magnificent characters.

Tuition for the class is $95. The registration deadline is Feb. 22. Participants will be emailed the conference call number and access codes after registering for the class.

Visit www.newriver.edu/community for information on upcoming classes or to register for the course or contact Gloria Kincaid (304-793-6101, gkincaid@newriver.edu).
