SWEET SPRINGS, WV (Hinton News) – The Sweet Springs Turnpike Trail is moving forward week by week. This past week the gate was set to ensure the fencing stays secure, signs have been made and some placed, with more to be placed this week, and the continuation of the trail is still moving forward towards the final destination – the top of Peter’s Mountain.

A tree fell across the trail, and within 48 hours, the volunteer maintenance team had the tree cleared. The Sweet Springs Turnpike Trail is free to anyone wanting to enjoy the exercise, the views and the experience of hiking where famous people used to travel. Please sign in at the office (a sign-in sheet is on the porch) before you begin your hike and sign out when you return. This is for safety reasons. Signs direct you where to go from there.

The Sweet Springs Resort Park has almost completed the tear-down of a building that was not repairable and kept much of the inside timbers to use for restoration purposes. Some of the timbers were incredible hand-hewn timbers ranging in various sizes from four-by-four to four-by-six, and up, and were pegged in place. Parts are being ordered to repair the sewer plant, and once completed, water will be restored to the Jeffersonian Hotel. Internet is being placed in the Historic Lewis House Bed & Breakfast for the guests that wish to use internet services and the Jeffersonian Hotel will have more internet as well.

The Sweet Springs Watershed Association is moving right along. More meetings and forums are planned – grant applications will be submitted to help protect the spring areas from damage, maintenance and media genres.

NOTE: To everyone who volunteered at Sweet Springs in 2023 – The Annual Volunteer Christmas Brunch will be held on Saturday, Dec. 16, at 11 a.m. The Park will provide all paper products and meats. Bring your favorite dish, exchange recipes, etc. There will be games and fun.

Summers County Humane Society/ACWP volunteer Martha Braswell receives a grant from the Hinton Area Foundation’s Greg Vandall (left) for $1500 to support K900 field trips to take a van full of dogs to a local park, on a designated day, in the hopes of drawing out new volunteers to come and meet the dogs and give them some exercise. Christina Cochran (right) explained, “It’s hoped these field trips will result in some new volunteers for the humane society, some happy pups, and more community awareness of what we do. The funding will offset the cost of gas to get the dogs back and forth, as well as lunch and other supplies for the volunteers.  There will be future details on this program and when the first dog walks will be."
