Summers County, (Hinton News) – Summers County Schools broke ground for the new middle school addition at the Summers County Comprehensive High School campus on Friday, September 30.
Students and staff from all schools in the county were present, as well as stakeholders and dignitaries. Among those present were the state superintendent, David Roach and a state board member Deborah Sullivan.
Student ambassadors were responsible for helping get the elementary students off the buses and greeting the dignitaries. The student ambassadors included Student Body President Sarah Turner, Student Body Vice President Sully Pivont, Xander Hudgins, Lawson Jones, Brandan Isaac, Peyton Miller, Liv Meador, Ashley Cooper, Carly Richmond, Karsyn Davis, Brianna Foreman, Aubrey Petrey, Peyton Matheny, Morgan Meador, Madison Adkins, Emilee Smith, Jacob Smith, Robey Brown and Noah Bragg.
The ceremony started with the Hinton Area Elementary Patriot Team leading everyone in the pledge and folding the flag to present to SCCHS Principal Al Hudgins. That flag will fly at the addition after construction is complete. Following the presentation of the flag, the SCCHS band played the national anthem. Principal Hudgins then welcomed all of the guests who were present.
Dignitaries were invited to come up and say a few words about the addition. Some who spoke were Roach, Sullivan, Commissioner Ted Kula, Senator Jack David Woodrum, Senator Stephen Baldwin, and Summers County BOE member Kenny Brogan.
All the dignitaries then stood at the shovels while student ambassadors took to the stage. The dignitaries broke the ground as the SCCHS band played the Summers County fight song.
Dignitaries, administrators, and student ambassadors moved to a reception, and students from all across the county were dismissed as the band played Crazy Train by Ozzy Osborne.
Construction began on Monday, October 3. The construction company is Radford & Radford Inc. out of Beckley, WV. This project is being funded in full by the WV School Building Authority.
