According to a recent announcement from the City of Hinton, the “sinkhole” near the Hinton Police Station has expanded. More of the roadway has now collapsed, causing the area to be reduced to one lane of alternating traffic. Use caution in this area and be prepared for potential delays.
West Virginia Senator Stephen Baldwin released a statement with additional details on the situation. According to his statement, the issue stems from a brick, square culvert that was constructed by hand more than 100 years ago. The culvert was placed well below ground level and is now failing as is the fill dirt around in the surrounding area.
Senator Baldwin goes on to say that the state is aware of the issue and the urgency stemming from the situation. He also notes that it is being treated as an emergency.
There is currently an attempt to locate the necessary supplies to fix the culvert long-term. Baldwin stated that “Resources are being directed to get it repaired ASAP.” He goes on to say that they hope to have repairs completed in weeks rather than months.
