The population of Summers County collectively mourned when Autumn Colors Express canceled its journey in 2021 due to a high COVID-19 infection rate. This effectively canceled Railroad Days, often referred to as “Train Days,” to the despair of many locals. However, things are looking up for 2022, and Autumn Colors Express announced that the train intends to move forward with its trip this fall.
Autumn Colors Express has been connecting Huntington and Charleston with Hinton for decades. Passengers ride on a vintage passenger train that travels through the scenic and historic New River Gorge National Park. The trip takes place at the perfect time to see the peak of West Virginia’s fall foliage season.
The Railroad Days festival always coincides with the famous Autumn Colors Express trip. Passengers on the train stop in Hinton, enjoy the festival and local businesses, then head back home the same day.
Local artisans and groups set up booths at the annual festival selling everything from homemade jam to blankets to paintings. There is also an incredible array of food to munch on before, after and during shopping. Additionally, the local library generally plans its annual book sale to occur during Train Days.
The event brings thousands of visitors to the small town of Hinton each year. This influx, in turn, provides a boost to the local economy and helps to support local groups.
No additional information has been released on the festival as of Tuesday, Feb. 15.
