Due to the governor’s recent announcement that all high schools are to be back in school full time, all Summers County High School students returned to a five-day schedule on Tuesday, April 6, after the spring weekend break.
This was the first time all students had attended at once since March. The school had been on a blended schedule.
Included in the return to school 5 days a week were students who were previously taking classes remotely from the high school teachers. Students that were taking classes virtually through a third-party provider remained at home.
Principal Al Hudgins said, “Students need to be in school as much as possible because having the help and support of in person instructor is a vital part of meeting the educational needs of our students. Most of our staff has been vaccinated and many of our students have had the opportunity to be vaccinated. That is the absolute best step in preparing to return. We are also going to follow the mitigation strategies that are required by the state department. We are also going to set up event canopies in the open space near the auditorium so our teachers have the choice to have outdoor classrooms and allow students to eat lunch outside on nice days.”
Hudgins hopes having students back will help finish this school year strong and better prepare for the fall 2021 school term.
