Elkins, W.V.a (The Hinton News) — The Appalachian Forest National Heritage Area (AFNHA) will host its annual Appalachian Forest Discovery Summit September 17–18, 2026, bringing together community leaders, conservationists, heritage organizations, tourism professionals, and others working to strengthen and celebrate the region’s natural and cultural heritage.
Held at The Railyard Event and Conference Center in Elkins, the two-day summit is designed to share successful practices and inspire new ideas for the continued support and growth of communities throughout the Appalachian Forest National Heritage Area. The first day will provide an opportunity to hear from speakers about their work throughout the region while the second day will include tours of prominent locations across Randolph County.
The September 17 conference will feature presentations and interactive sessions focused on a range of topics relevant to the future of Appalachian forests, including forest-based enterprise, sustainable recreation, historic preservation, advocacy, storytelling, and genealogy. Featured speakers include representatives from West Virginia Rivers Coalition, Future Generations University, Cacapon Preservation Solutions, Pauley Genealogy, and more.
The summit will conclude its first day with a reception at The Darden Mill. On Friday, September 18, attendees will have the opportunity to participate in tours of significant locations throughout Randolph County, including Beverly Heritage Center and Randolph County Historical Society.
The Appalachian Forest Discovery Summit conference, reception, and tours are all open to anyone interested in the natural and cultural resources of the highland forests of West Virginia and western Maryland.
