A special election is coming up in the city of Hinton.
The purpose of this election is to vote to maintain a levy that has been in place for more than 50 years. This will not cause a tax increase, which is a common concern among citizens when renewal comes up, according to Hinton City Manager Chris Meadows.
The city of Hinton uses the funds from the levy to aid vital organizations within the community. This includes emergency services such as the city fire department and the police department, the senior center, the public library and the health department. Other uses include funding youth sports and activities as well as the repair and renovation of city buildings and the paving of streets.
If approved to continue, the levies will take place in each of the next five fiscal years starting July 1, 2021, July 1, 2022, July 1, 2023, July 1, 2024, and July 1, 2025, respectively.
If the levy passes again, nothing will change for citizens, there will not be additional fees or taxes. The current rates, which include the levies, have been in place for many years.
The election will be held on January 30. However, early voting will start Jan. 19 and ending Jan. 27. All early voting will take place at City Hall and will be available during normal business hours. It is important to note that early voting will also be available on two Saturdays, Jan. 16 and Jan. 23 from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. City Hall will be closed on Monday, Jan. 18, in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
A sample ballot is available on the city of Hinton’s website. This ballot lists the exact dollar amounts associated with this levy. For more information, contact City Hall during normal business hours or visit the city’s website.
