A Bluefield man is facing domestic battery and strangulation charges following an Aug. 14 incident in which police say a woman lost consciousness during an alleged assault.
According to the Bluefield Police Department, officers were called to the Reese Street area after the woman reported that the father of her child had attacked her.
Police identified the suspect as Jordan Masterson.
Investigators said the woman had gone to Masterson’s residence to pick up their child when an argument began after Masterson reportedly became upset about an incoming phone call on her cellphone. Police said Masterson allegedly grabbed the woman by the neck with both hands and applied enough pressure to cause her to lose consciousness. Their child was reportedly in the back seat of the vehicle during the incident.
The woman was evaluated by Bluefield EMS, and officers reported seeing marks on her neck. Police said Masterson initially fled the area but later contacted an officer and agreed to come to the police station. He arrived shortly before midnight and was arrested.
Masterson was booked into the Bluefield City Jail on charges of domestic battery and strangulation. The strangulation charge stems from the allegation that pressure was applied to the woman’s neck, resulting in visible injuries and loss of consciousness.
The allegations have not been proven in court, and Masterson is presumed innocent unless found guilty at a later date.
