HINTON- The 2026 West Virginia State Water Festival concluded after another successful week of events that brought thousands of residents and visitors to Hinton for one of the state’s longest-running community celebrations.
Festival organizers credited the event’s success to the dedication of hundreds of volunteers, sponsors, businesses, public safety agencies and community members who worked behind the scenes to organize activities ranging from parades and pageants to concerts, an art show and the festival’s first-ever kayak race.
Festival leaders offered special recognition to City Manager Megan Turner for her months of planning and leadership, noting that she played a key role in coordinating vendors, volunteers and countless event details while helping ensure each activity ran smoothly.
Volunteers Peyton Matheney, Pam Hartwell and many others were also praised for organizing major events, including the Pretty Baby Contest, Queen Mermaid Court, Rally on the River, street dance and numerous festival activities. Organizers said the dedication of volunteers was evident throughout the week and was instrumental in making the festival a success.
The Grand Parade once again showcased the creativity and community spirit that have long defined the Water Festival. Parade awards were presented to the Summers County Bus Garage for Best Overall and Best Representation of the Water Festival, June Ward Balloons by June for Most Creative, the Summers County Humane Society/ACWP for Most Enthusiastic, and Hobo’s Towing, LLC for Best Decorated Vehicle. The Summers County Public Library’s annual Art Show also earned praise for highlighting the talents of local and regional artists, while large crowds throughout the week reflected the community’s continued enthusiasm for the festival.
One of the biggest additions this year was the inaugural WV State Water Festival Kayak Race, organized by Ronnie Harbert and Jessica Harbert-Meadows.
Organizers thanked the racers, volunteers and emergency personnel who helped launch what they hope becomes a new festival tradition. Station 13 Fire & Rescue, the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources, the Summers County Sheriff’s Department and the Summers County 911 Center were recognized for providing safety on the river, while Hawg Jaws BBQ was thanked for providing meals to first responders, DNR officers and volunteers working the event.
Festival officials also expressed their appreciation to every sponsor, volunteer, business and resident who contributed to another successful celebration and said they look forward to welcoming everyone back to Hinton for next year’s West Virginia State Water Festival.
