HINTON W.Va. (Hinton News) – CFMH Museum had the honor of touring 160 Hinton Area Elementary students and staff on May 20 and 22. Children of all ages always seem to love the museum. It holds many items that young people have never seen before or know what they might be used for.
For starters, they can’t imagine that the museum is a house that is 150 years old. One little boy said that it was even older than his grandmother. They are charmed by all the tools that used cranks, like the egg beater, flour sifter, cherry pitter and sausage maker. When asked about the antique bed warmer they would guess a popcorn popper or pooper scooper. Some of the younger staff members are curious too.
The gallery featured the mobile display of Summers County Black History. Many of the students and staff were interested in the pictures. Some asked the guides questions about the display.
The master bedroom upstairs is always popular with its beautiful furnishings and colorful décor. However, the kids were amazed that people used a chamber pot to relieve themselves at night. One girl was intrigued by the 100-year-old velvet crazy quilt. She told her guide that her grandmother makes quilts like it, and she plans on asking if granny would teach her how to quilt.
The guides, Carol Jackson, Lynda Lancaster, Liz Reed, Susan Mazure-Stommen and Lynne Larsen, said the children were well behaved and had a great time exploring Hinton’s history. Organizers said, “Many thanks to Sonya Murrell, who reached out to organize this walking tour of all our Museums.”
Organizers said, “We love our CFM House Museum and take pleasure in showing it to others.”
