MONROE COUNTY W.Va. (Hinton News) – Monroe Health Center is proud to celebrate National Health Center Week (NHCW) 2024, taking place August 4-10. The annual event highlights the essential role Community Health Centers play in improving public health and advancing health equity. Health centers represent the nation’s largest primary care network, serving 31.5 million patients nationwide.

This year’s NHCW celebration, launched by the National Association of Community Health Centers (NACHC), focuses on “Powering Communities Through Caring Connections” through a host of scheduled events that include resource fairs, back-to-school drives, health screenings, and visits to health centers by local, state, and national leaders.

With a mission to make high-quality, affordable care available to everyone, regardless of their ability to pay or insurance status, health centers save lives on the front lines of our nation’s most pressing public health challenges. They are powered by a workforce of nearly 300,000 dedicated professionals who reach beyond the walls of the exam room to not only prevent illness but also address the social drivers that may cause it — climate change, homelessness, substance use disorders, food insecurity and behavioral health.

Nearly 1,500 health centers are the health care home to:

  • One in 5 uninsured people
  • One in 3 people living in poverty
  • One in 7 rural residents
  • Nearly 9 million children
  • 400,000 veterans

Monroe Health Center has served the community for over 50 years, employs approximately 100 employees, and serves over 9,000 patients. Monroe Health Center has locations in Union, Peterstown, and Forest Hill, WV, and New Castle, VA; the Craig County Dental Center in New Castle, VA; and school wellness centers in Craig County schools and all Monroe County schools.  Monroe Health Center provides a full range of medical services including routine check-ups, well child visits, immunizations, hearing/vision screening, acute care for injury or illness, behavioral health, counseling, lactation support, school sports physicals, specialist referrals and follow-up, as well as appointments via Tele-Health. The Dental Center offers preventative and restorative dental care to improve oral health, speech, chewing ability, and cosmetic appearance to enhance nutrition, confidence, and quality of life. For more information about Monroe Health Center or to schedule an appointment, call 304-772-3064.

Summers County Humane Society/ACWP volunteer Martha Braswell receives a grant from the Hinton Area Foundation’s Greg Vandall (left) for $1500 to support K900 field trips to take a van full of dogs to a local park, on a designated day, in the hopes of drawing out new volunteers to come and meet the dogs and give them some exercise. Christina Cochran (right) explained, “It’s hoped these field trips will result in some new volunteers for the humane society, some happy pups, and more community awareness of what we do. The funding will offset the cost of gas to get the dogs back and forth, as well as lunch and other supplies for the volunteers.  There will be future details on this program and when the first dog walks will be."
