SUMMERS COUNTY W.Va. (Hinton News) – As the sun ascends higher in the sky and the days grow longer, Summers County, West Virginia, emerges as a beacon for summer explorers. With its verdant forests, meandering rivers, and abundant outdoor activities, this picturesque region invites visitors to embrace the warmth of the season and embark on unforgettable adventures.

Nestled amid the natural splendor of Summers County is the renowned Pipestem Resort State Park, a haven for outdoor enthusiasts of all ages. Boasting over 4,000 acres of pristine wilderness, this expansive park offers a myriad of recreational opportunities, from hiking and biking to golfing and horseback riding.

One of the highlights of Pipestem Resort is the Adventure Zone, an exhilarating playground where thrill-seekers can test their mettle against a variety of adrenaline-pumping challenges. Daredevils can soar through the treetops on the park’s zipline course, taking in panoramic views of the surrounding landscape as they zip from platform to platform.

For those who prefer less thrill to their travel, the park also features an aerial tramway that transports visitors to the bottom of the gorge, where they can embark on scenic hikes along the park’s network of trails. From leisurely strolls to heart-pounding treks, there’s a route for every skill level, each offering glimpses of the park’s diverse flora and fauna.

But the adventure doesn’t stop there. Pipestem Resort is also home to a wealth of other attractions, including two championship golf courses, an equestrian center, and a tranquil lake where visitors can paddleboard, kayak, or cast a line in search of bass and trout.

In addition to the excitement of Pipestem Resort, Summers County offers a plethora of other outdoor activities just waiting to be explored. History buffs can delve into the region’s past at the John Henry Historical Park, while nature lovers can marvel at the majestic beauty of Sandstone Falls.

Fishing enthusiasts will find paradise in the waters of Summers County. The Greenbrier River, New River, and Bluestone Lake offer ample opportunities to cast a line and reel in the day’s catch. Whether you’re angling for trout, bass, or catfish, these pristine waters are teeming with aquatic life, ensuring a rewarding experience for novice and experienced fishermen alike.

For those seeking a more leisurely way to enjoy the water, the Greenbrier River provides a serene backdrop for kayaking, canoeing, and tubing. Drift lazily downstream as you soak up the sun and immerse yourself in the tranquility of nature.

Whether you’re hiking along rugged trails, casting a line in pristine waters, or soaring through the treetops on a zipline, Summers County offers endless opportunities for adventure and discovery.

Summers County Humane Society/ACWP volunteer Martha Braswell receives a grant from the Hinton Area Foundation’s Greg Vandall (left) for $1500 to support K900 field trips to take a van full of dogs to a local park, on a designated day, in the hopes of drawing out new volunteers to come and meet the dogs and give them some exercise. Christina Cochran (right) explained, “It’s hoped these field trips will result in some new volunteers for the humane society, some happy pups, and more community awareness of what we do. The funding will offset the cost of gas to get the dogs back and forth, as well as lunch and other supplies for the volunteers.  There will be future details on this program and when the first dog walks will be."
