HINTON W.Va. (Hinton News) – In 1869 the C&O was formed to develop a rail line from the Chesapeake Bay to Huntington which would be a link for a coast-to-coast continental railroad. The link would transfer coal from the newly emerging coalfields of West Virginia as well as timber, freight, and passengers.
The C&O blasted a path through the New River Gorge and made Hinton its Divisional Terminal around 1871.
Hinton had begun to grow and became incorporated on Sept. 21, 1880. By the early 1900s, Hinton had made its mark on the map. Hinton was here to stay.
