Charles J. Butler

Charles J. Butler, 94, of Spartanburg, SC, died January 14, 2024.

Born on a farm at Red Sulphur Springs, WV, he was the son of the late Charles S. “Dick” Butler and Anna Lee Thompson Butler. His early life was in Monroe County and in Summers County in the Lick Creek Community (Pipestem District).

Following graduation from Hinton High School in 1946, he served in the military for four years. He was a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and Furman University, Greenville, SC.

Charles was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Doris R. Butler. Surviving are three daughters and their husbands, nine grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren. Also surviving is a sister, Pollyann Butler Katona of Princeton, WV.

He was predeceased by a daughter, Vicki Butler Sinclair; a sister, Lily Elizabeth Butler Petrey; and a brother, Donald Lewis Butler.

Charles was a retired public school educator, having served almost forty years in Spartanburg, SC, county schools.

A private family burial was held in Spartanburg, SC.
