Summers County Public Library

HINTON, (Hinton News) – It was in April of 1998 that a group of book lovers gathered at the Summers County Public Library to discuss Cold Mountain by Charles Frazier thus starting a program that has met once a month ever since then to talk about books. This past April (2023), the group met to discuss Demon Copperhead by Barbara Kingsolver.  It is fitting that these two award-winning historical novels should bracket all those years of reading and talking about books. And although not all the group members are the same as those who came to the first meeting, the discussion of Demon was as stimulating and lively as the one for Cold Mountain all those years ago.

The anniversary of this longstanding Library program was not the only April milestone worth noting at the Library. On April 21, the Friends of the Library held its most successful Salad Luncheon fundraiser ever!  It took a lot of effort on the part of many, many people to pull that off. Heartfelt thanks go to all the folks who worked so hard – those who called and solicited salads and cakes, who delivered order forms, took orders, set up tables, made salads and/or cakes, took up money, delivered lunches all over the county, cleaned up and who knows what all else that I have forgotten to mention.  After expenses, we raised $1,396.89!!!

These funds will be given to the Board of Library Directors who are in charge of library finances to be used for such things as supporting programs like the Book Discussion Group or to help cover extraordinary expenses such as some much-needed maintenance on the library building.

If you would like to be involved either with fundraising or with some of the other volunteer tasks that help keep the Library going, stop by or call the Library and leave your name and contact information. We will add you to the Friends contact list and let you know what is coming up that you might enjoy helping with.

If you are interested in participating in the Library’s book discussion group or any of the other programs offered by the Library, you can find out all about them on the Library’s website at www.summerscountylibrary.org.

And mark your calendars. The next Friends of the Library project will be the Annual Library Golf Tournament to be held at the Willow Wood Golf Course on June 25. Polish up your clubs, invite all your golfing buddies and come on out for a day of fun and help support a good cause.
