James William Stokes, Jr., 94, of Nimitz, WV, left this world on Monday, March 6, 2023, while at Genesis New Martinsville.

Jim was born September 27, 1928, in Hinton, WV, son of the late Dr. James W. and Joyce (Goldston) Stokes, Sr.

Known to his friends as Jim or Buddy, he was an electrician by trade, having studied electricity at Michigan Technical Institute, but he was also the ultimate Jack-of-all-trades, with his final occupation as builder/owner/operator of the KOA Campground in Pipestem, WV. He was a graduate of the Arthur Murray School of Dance, received a teaching certificate from Santa Monica College, where he also taught, and studied and taught at College of the Redwoods.

He was a USMC Sergeant and devoted much of his spare time in his eighties to volunteering at the Veteran’s Hospital in Beckley, WV.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Doris Ann (Sykes) Stokes; a set of infant twins; and sister, Eleanor Agard.

Surviving are his three children, Debbie (Dennis) Alder of Nimitz, WV, William (Charleen) Stokes of New Martinsville, WV, and Sandra (Neil) Boden of Beckley, WV; four grandchildren, Kelly (Sam) Alder-Janes, Brian (Link) Alder, Miranda (Brian) Rogers, and Kevin Stokes; and several great-grandchildren.

At Buddy’s request, a private memorial service will be held at the convenience of the family.

Memorial contributions may be made to Beckley VA Medical Center, 200 Veterans Avenue, Beckley, WV 25801.
