The Summers County Recycle Center at 2128 Greenbrier Drive opens on October 1 with an open house from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. A hamburger or hotdog, chips and water will be available for a $5 donation to help fund this recycling service. The Summers County Solid Waste Authority (SCSWA) Board will be available to show people the new facility as well as what and where recyclables will be taken. As a collection center, all proceeds from the collection of the recyclables will directly benefit the center’s operation.

Regular hours will be Tuesday and Thursday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturday from 8 a.m. to noon. We will collect cleaned, flattened cardboard, rinsed plastic #1 and rinsed plastic #2 separated between clear and colored, clean metal cans separated by tin and aluminum, newspapers, and other items as we grow. Staff will be present to assist and answer any questions.

The Summers County Recycling Collections Center has the potential to host educational classes, crafting and upcycling demonstrations, expanded recycling services, and a host of other uses. Special thanks to the Conways from Safe n Sound Security Service, the City of Hinton, Commissioner Gore and the Board of volunteers, Todd Riggs of the Ronceverte Recycle Center, Pace Analytical, and all those who volunteered their time and resources to make this happen for Summers County! Summers County Humane Society/ACWP volunteer Martha Braswell receives a grant from the Hinton Area Foundation’s Greg Vandall (left) for $1500 to support K900 field trips to take a van full of dogs to a local park, on a designated day, in the hopes of drawing out new volunteers to come and meet the dogs and give them some exercise. Christina Cochran (right) explained, “It’s hoped these field trips will result in some new volunteers for the humane society, some happy pups, and more community awareness of what we do. The funding will offset the cost of gas to get the dogs back and forth, as well as lunch and other supplies for the volunteers.  There will be future details on this program and when the first dog walks will be."
