Wild, Wonderful and Healthy Summers County to hold public meeting

It has been a while since Wild, Wonderful and Healthy Summers County (WWHSC) has reached out to our community. COVID-19 stopped us all in our tracks, but WWHSC is back! We are excited to continue the work of making Summers County a healthy and safe place to live, work and play. Our mission includes having affordable, safe housing as well as creating a community infrastructure that offers opportunities for all residents and visitors to participate in recreational activities.

Despite the need to follow COVID protocols, we have been busy. One of our core members, Shalom Tazewell, is the chair of the Summers County Commission’s Dilapidated Structures Committee. This committee works with county property owners to ensure their properties are safe and healthy.

Members of our core team and volunteers surveyed properties in Hinton, laying the groundwork for the City of Hinton to remove 22 dilapidated structures that were both unsafe and an eyesore. The City of Hinton has also hired Chris Brust as Code Enforcement Officer. Chris is dedicated to Hinton being beautiful and safe. WWHSC looks forward to working with Chris as we identify homeowners with specific home repair needs.

If you have noticed the new playground and community park located between 14th and 15th Ave., WWHSC, the City of Hinton, the Summers County Commission as well as over 40 volunteers undertook the challenge to create a safe, fun, and green space for all to enjoy. There’s a train!!! In addition to the train, the gazebo is built and soon, planter boxes and additional benches will be added to the park. The upper section of the park will feature more activities for children. Our hope is to have a ribbon-cutting ceremony (all of you are invited) by mid-October, 2022. The City of Hinton and WWHSC are currently in talks about transforming an additional lot into a community green space, but more on that at the meeting.

The Meeting:

Please join WWHSC at The McCreery Hotel on September 8th, 2022, at 5:00 p.m. for a more detailed presentation on our goals and to learn how you can get involved to continue the momentum of moving Summers County forward. Dinner is included with this free event.

Please respond using the following link to RSVP for this very important meeting: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/9J9D8BS

Contact WWHSC Coordinator, Melissa Jacobs at missyj12@hotmail.com with any questions or to RSVP if difficulty with above link. We look forward to seeing you on September 8th!

Sincerely,

Wild, Wonderful and Healthy Summers County Core Support Team
