Candidate Information for Hinton News
My name is Linda J. Huffman, of Talcott, WV, and I am announcing my candidacy for the office of Summers County Commission.
I am married to David L. Huffman, retired Summers County Land Surveyor, mother of Jeffrey, Beverly, Patrick, and Marcus Huffman.
I started my career in corrections at the West Virginia State Prison for Women, Pence Springs, WV, which led me to a career with the Department of Justice, Bureau of Prisons, for twenty-one years. I faithfully served the bureau and worked in five of its facilities, Federal Prison Fl., Federal Prison Tn., and United States Penitentiary, Ks, where I was appointed as the first female supervisor, to ever work inside the main walls of a penitentiary, an all-male facility. I served in many capacities, earning numerous promotions and awards. My position entailed a myriad of responsibilities, to include a training facilitator; report writer, writer of policy; reviewing policy and ensuring proper documentation of policy; an auditor, overseeing and administering rulings, handed down by federal and state courts; and ensuring victim restitution to families, are just a few of my duties.
As a manager, I had oversight of departmental budgets, which required a knowledge of finance and spending.
I was appointed as interim Magistrate, for Summers Magistrate Court, under the watchful eye of the Circuit Court Judge, of 31st District 31, awaiting final election results, for the upcoming term. I was and still active in community organizations, i.e., Hilldale Talcott Ruritan Club, Summers County ARH Auxiliary, Hinton Area Foundation and John Henry Days. I participated in Special Olympics in Florida, assisting clients with physical, mental, and emotional disabilities to aspire for more.
In any position, there is a reasonable amount of adjusting and learning curves that follow. I am not one to shy away from gaining knowledge of the duties and responsibilities of the County Commissioner, which include supporting community services, supporting the county seat, maintaining records and taxes, properties of the county, proper documenting of paperwork, which is designated to specified county offices, ensuring public meeting dates, and overseeing budgets for county offices, among other duties as a commissioner.
This is a challenge, and I am willing to accept it as a candidate and I ask you to challenge yourself and provide me with that opportunity.
I look forward to your support and to serving you as Summers County Commissioner for the next six years.
