An inmate at Southern Regional Jail has been charged with possession of a controlled substance following an overdose at the facility.

On January 14, an officer with the West Virginia State Police responded to a call from Southern Regional Jail stating that an inmate had overdosed, and that during a subsequent search of inmates, Justin Tyson Brown, 38, of Lewisburg, was found to be in possession of about one ounce of a white powder substance suspected to be Fentanyl/Heroin, according to the criminal complaint filed in Raleigh County.

Brown had originally been booked at Southern Regional Jail on January 13 after he was involved in a single vehicle accident on Interstate 64 at mile marker 131 eastbound the prior day.

According to that criminal complaint, Brown was arrested for driving the vehicle, a rented 2022 Nissan Pathfinder, while his license had been revoked for a prior DUI.

The trooper who responded to the scene of the accident found Brown to be in possession of about one ounce of Fentanyl/Heroin, about 5 grams of a crystal like substance believed to be Methamphetamine and electronic scales.

Brown was transported to Beckley ARH Hospital following the accident. He was later cleared for incarceration and taken to SRJ.

He is being charged with one felony count of possession with intent to deliver heroin, one misdemeanor count of possession of methamphetamine and one misdemeanor count of driving revoked for DUI.

In addition to those initial charges, Brown now faces one felony count of being an inmate in possession of a controlled substance. His collective surety/cash bonds amount to $100,000.
