Hinton native, active community volunteer, and coach, Donald Frederick Mock, Jr. (aka Freddie Mock) passed away on March 11 of this year. His children, DF Mock, III and Mollie Mock Kaufman have established the Donald Frederick Mock, Jr. Memorial Fund with the Hinton Area Foundation. This endowed fund is organized to honor Freddie’s passion for coaching a variety of sports and mentoring youth in Summers County for over 30 years.

The purpose of the Donald Frederick Mock, Jr. Memorial Fund is to provide grant funding opportunities– beginning in 2022–for extracurricular activities and programs focused on sports, indoor and outdoor recreation, fine arts and music-related entertainment in Summers County, West Virginia. All non-profit and volunteer organizations based in Summers County, as well as all athletic and extracurricular teams, programs, and organizations within the Summers County public school system which support and benefit youth 18 years old and younger, are eligible to apply, if the request meets the specific qualification criteria outlined in the fund purpose.

Freddie was a 1970 graduate of Hinton High School, where he served as the student body President. He played football, basketball, and baseball and was a member of the 1968 AA state football championship team. He graduated in 1974 from Concord College with a BS in Business Administration and was a member of Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity. While at Concord, he lettered in football and baseball and during this time was also an amateur boxer. Freddie’s devotion to athletics transitioned into coaching and officiating. He coached youth sports teams in Summers County for many years including Little League Baseball, midget league football and elementary basketball as well as officiating sporting events throughout southern West Virginia. He took great interest in developing and mentoring youth in their athletic endeavors and remained very close with many of the players he coached continuing to offer guidance and support.

Contributions to the Donald Frederick Mock, Jr. Memorial Fund can be made to the Hinton Area Foundation by check, debit or credit card. Visit our website at www.hintonareafoundation.org “Donate Now” for details. A new golf tournament, “The Freddie,” will take place at Willowwood Country Club in Hinton in order to raise donations for the Fund. Registration and sponsorship opportunities are available by contacting Hinton Area Foundation at (304) 309-5502.
