The Summers County Sheriff’s Department announced in January that they would be holding six concealed carry permit classes spanning over six months. The first class was initially scheduled for February 27; however, the class was postponed until March 6.
According to Deputy Cochran, the instructor, the class successfully took place on March 6 with a total of 19 students.
Cochran said he felt the class was a success and that he was glad that they could show the community a different side of law enforcement. He also stated that all of the remaining classes have already been filled to max capacity.
The department requested that all students who attended the class bring their own masks. According to the original announcement, the classes are offered to Summers County residents at no cost. Anyone from outside of the county is also welcome to attend, but a $50 class fee will apply. Students are responsible for bringing their own firearms as well as 25 rounds of ammunition.
Response from the community was immediate on the initial social media announcement with many positive comments and inquiries into registering for class. Within three days of the initial social media post, the first three classes were completely filled, according to a follow-up post from the department.
