The first step has been taken to clear land for independent senior living apartments in Hinton. Demolition began Sunday to make room on Temple Street, 9th Avenue and along the alley behind the planned construction.
Construction is set to begin this summer with contractor Ted Boggess from Monroe County. Over the weekend, Main Street Senior Living Project volunteer Cleo Mathews said, “Wow! It’s finally starting. You work on this stuff for years and you finally see it happening and you are overwhelmed with joy.”
Mathews said the first four units will face Temple Street and four of the apartment units will face 9th Avenue. The clearing of the property along the alley area of the property, she said, will be used for a parking area and elevator to transport residents up to their homes on Temple Street.
The new senior housing project is being led by Main Street Senior Living Project President Mary Lou Haley and financed by a $740,000 grant from the Home Loan Bank in Pittsburg. Keith Lively is the attorney for the project.
