Summers County Commission President Charles Saunders purchased the first copy of the new book, The Civil War in Summers County, which has just been released by the Summers County Historical Society.
Pictured are D. Wayne Harvey, right, president of the society, and Saunders, left. While other books have bits and pieces about the Civil War in Summers County, this is the book with the most complete information about the war here. It contains listings of over 800 soldiers, many heretofore unpublished stories, over 100 photos of soldiers, and diary entries from future-president, Rutherford B. Hayes, who camped in Summers County for over a month when he was a lieutenant colonel for the Union Army.
Books may be purchased at the Explore Summers County Visitor Center on Temple Street, Tue-Sat, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. for $25. Mail orders should be sent to Summers County Historical Society, PO Box 295, Hinton, WV 25951, with $5 added for postage.
