MCLEAN
Marilyn Eileen McCoy McLean, age 84, died Tuesday, February 9, 2021, following a brief illness.
Born September 7, 1936, in Ritchie County, WV, she was the daughter of the late Reverend William Robert McCoy and Bertha Elder McCoy. She was preceded in death by her husband of 31 years, the late Samuel David McLean, Sr., and a brother, William Robert McCoy II.
Coming from a long line of educators, she began her teaching career in Kopperston, WV, and retired from the Summers County Schools, where she taught High School English and Middle School Reading. She was an enthusiastic faculty sponsor of the National Honor Society.
A graduate of Fort Ashby High School, she was senior class president and the only female in her class who attended college. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from Alderson-Broaddus College and a Masters Degree in Reading Education from West Virginia University. She was a member of the American Association of University Women of Hinton and the Daughters of the American Revolution.
She loved children and, following retirement, she volunteered at Summers County High School as a receptionist and taught private piano lessons. She was an accomplished organist and played at several local churches in Hinton.
She is survived by her sons, Samuel David McLean, Jr. (Charleston, SC), and William Roland McLean (Manhassett, NY); a daughter-in-law, Caroline Wyche McLean (Charleston, SC); her grandchildren, Samuel D. McLean III (Charleston, SC), Sarah Virginia McLean (Charleston, SC), William Roland McLean II (Manhassett, NY), and Regina Grange McLean (Manhassett, NY); a sister-in-law, Meg McCoy (Sewanee, GA); a nephew, William Robert McCoy III (Buford, GA); and several great nieces and nephews.
A visitation was held on Sunday, February 14, 2021, at Pivont Funeral Home from 2 p.m. until 4 p.m. with the funeral immediately following. Entombment with family and friends was Monday, February 15, 2021, at 11 a.m. at Greenbrier Burial Park Mausoleum.
Along with her grandchildren, Steve Pack and Tom Hutchinson will serve as pallbearers.
