For the third week in a row, Hinton News is honoring our local emergency services. This week, we honor the Talcott Volunteer Fire Department.
This department has been around for many years, but during that time it has undergone many changes. In recent years, the department had to close its doors. Thankfully, the community rallied together and many brave individuals stepped forward to ensure it could reopen.
Among those who stepped forward was Bill Costomiris who now serves as chief of the department. Timmy Ulrich is currently serving as assistant chief.
This department runs a myriad of different types of calls. To best serve the community, they have three Class A pumpers; a brush truck, a 3,000-gallon tanker and a multi-use utility/rescue truck.
Their membership consists of 25 certified firefighters and two trainees.
The department’s coverage area consists of approximately thirty-five square miles. Within this area, there are around fifteen hundred permanent residents. On average, they run seventy emergency calls per year. They also assist other departments when needed throughout the county.
Like the previous two fire departments honored, this is a fully volunteer department. The firefighters take time out of their personal lives to train, run calls, maintain the station and trucks, and keep the community safe.
Chief Costomiris said, “All of us at Talcott Fire Department are committed to serving the community, not only during an emergency but all year long. We had a ‘meet Santa’ event last year and were looking forward to doing it again this year, but alas it just wasn’t possible. We decided to do a fundraising drive to buy toys and food for needy families in the community. We are finalizing all of the toy wrapping and will be picking up the food soon.”
The Hinton News thanks you for your efforts and dedication to helping the community.
Talcott VFD has not yet chosen their 2020 MVP.
