Week One Honorees – Summers County Volunteer Fire Department
Summers County Volunteer Fire Department, Station 13 is a part of the Summers County Emergency Services system. They are also this week’s hometown hero highlight.
This is a completely volunteer department, which means no one in the department receives payment for their work. They receive the same training that paid firefighters do, all on their own time. Most members of this and any volunteer department hold full-time jobs in addition to their work with the department.
Around their other responsibilities, these courageous men and women take the time to train, keep up the station, apply for grants, maintain the trucks and equipment and run calls. Not to mention participation in local parades and providing water hauling services.
In addition to fire protection and preplanning, the service list for this particular department includes swift water rescue, rope rescue and vehicle rescue, including the Jaws of Life.
Not only does the department run all calls within its service area, but they also travel throughout the county when another department requests aid. They have assisted on everything from structure fires to vehicle collisions and much more.
This department was founded by Ray Wiseman, Franklin Lilly, Warren McHugh and Jim Strattis.
The station is located at 80 Hinton Bypass, Hinton WV 25951.
