Students from across Summers County will come together on Monday, May 18 at 4:30 PM at the Talcott Elementary School Multipurpose Room for the 2nd Annual Summers County Schools Battle of the Books competition – an exciting celebration of reading, teamwork, and school spirit.
Battle of the Books is a quiz-bowl style academic competition that encourages students to read a selected list of books, strengthen comprehension skills, and work collaboratively as teams. More than just a competition, the program helps students build confidence, develop friendships, and discover a lifelong love of reading.
For many students, Battle of the Books becomes one of the most memorable and exciting learning experiences of the school year.
The initiative was brought to Summers County through the efforts of local organizer Amanda Wheeler, who participated in Battle of the Books as a student in Greenbrier County in 2000 and 2001.
“I loved those years of competing as a student and wanted to bring this fun reading competition to Summers County students,” Wheeler said. “It has been incredible to watch students grow in confidence, teamwork, and excitement for reading throughout the process.”
Battle of the Books is proudly supported through a grant from the Hinton Area Foundation, which helps provide study materials, a buzzer system, team t-shirts, and other resources that bring the competition to life for young readers across the county.
After months of reading, practicing, and preparing, the county’s three elementary schools will face off in the final showdown in what promises to be an exciting celebration of literacy, collaboration, and school pride.
Community members, families, and supporters are invited to attend and cheer on the students as they compete.
