HINTON, W.Va. (Hinton News) – Summers County Schools is proud to announce a special community event featuring former NFL player Deon Butler, to be held on Wednesday, April 23, at 6 p.m. at the Ritz Theatre in Hinton.

This free event is open to the public and will offer an inspiring evening centered on perseverance, resilience, and the power of overcoming obstacles. Butler, who played in the National Football League and built a successful career through discipline and determination, will share his personal journey, including his challenges growing up with dyslexia.

As a student, Butler struggled with reading and academics, often facing frustration. Like many individuals with dyslexia, he had to work harder than his peers to process written information and succeed in the classroom. With the support of educators, mentors, and his own persistence, he developed strategies to overcome those challenges, ultimately excelling both academically and athletically.

His story is especially meaningful for students and families in Summers County. Many local students face their own learning challenges, economic barriers, or personal obstacles. Butler’s message reinforces that these challenges do not define a person’s potential. Instead, with the right support system, determination, and belief in oneself, they can become a source of strength.

Leading up to the event, Butler will visit Summers County schools to speak directly with students about his experiences. These in-school sessions will focus on encouraging students who may struggle with reading, confidence, or motivation, helping them understand they are not alone and that success can take many different paths.

The broader community will also find value in Butler’s message. His story highlights the importance of recognizing different learning styles, supporting youth through challenges, and investing in environments where all students can succeed. For parents, educators, and community members, the event serves as a reminder that encouragement, patience, and advocacy can have a lasting impact on a young person’s future.

“This is more than just a guest speaker event,” organizers shared. “It’s an opportunity for our entire community to come together, hear a powerful message of resilience, and reflect on how we can better support and uplift our young people.”

The event will take place at the historic Ritz Theatre in downtown Hinton and is expected to draw attendees from across Summers County and the surrounding region.
