Jack O. Young
Jack O. Young passed away on July 11th, 2025, at the age of 97. He was born June 8th, 1928, to Charles A. Young and Vera Lilly Young in Hinton, WV.
He is survived by two sons, Mike Young and his wife, Donna of Clayton, GA, and Gary Young of Yukon, OK; five grandsons; three granddaughters; one great-grandson; and six great-granddaughters; five nieces; three nephews; and one brother, David Young and his wife, Kyra, of Lafayette, IN. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Nancy Patricia Young; and his sister, Nancy Jo Young.
He graduated from high school in Hinton, WV, and obtained a bachelor’s degree from Concord University in Athens, WV. He entered the US Army in 1946 as part of the occupation forces in Japan at the close of WWII. His duties included operating a 30-caliber machine gun.
He was an employee of the Chesapeake and Ohio, Chessie System, and CSX railroad, first as a fireman and then as a locomotive engineer for 40 years, making runs from Peru to Cincinnati and Peru to Chicago.
His hobbies included photography, genealogy, fishing, traveling, playing guitar, boating, skiing, spending time with family, friends, kids, grandkids, and flying… especially flying. He earned his solo pilots license, while still in high school. He was a member of the Main Street United Methodist Church in Peru for over 50 years.
In their later years, he and his wife spent their time between Peru in the summers and Palmetto, FL, in the winters. In Florida, he was known for starting the Jack’s Jammers musical group that played every Wednesday in the main hall of the Palmetto mobile home club.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, August 16, 2025, from 10 a.m. – 11 a.m. at Flowers-Leedy Funeral Home, 105 West Third Street, Peru, IN. A funeral service will follow at 11 a.m. Burial will take place at Mount Hope Cemetery in Peru.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Guardian Angel Hospice.
