NIMITZ W.Va. (Hinton News) – If you’re looking for a well rounded shopping experience, this may be the perfect place for you. K&M Farms offers a wide variety of products including many rabbit products and goat products. A few of the wonderful products offered at K&M include rabbit meat, jerky and eggs. Run by Michael Ray and Kerry Bridges, the farm tries to use all parts of the rabbit, offering whole and ground meat. To keep with using the whole animal, they use the skins, hair and tails in dehydrated dog treats. They also use the liver, hearts and lungs for dog biscuits. As a special treat, lucky rabbits’ feet are also available.
Mike and Kerry moved here from Nantucket Island, Massachusetts and were semi-retired at the time. Kerry was a retired military emergency room nurse and Mike is a licensed pipefitter by trade, primarily doing propane new construction with black iron pipe. They moved to Nimitz on 40 acres with the primary goal of starting a small homestead and to have a sustainable food source for themselves. They started out with rabbits and chickens and moved on to goats, primarily to help clear the land. Then they acquired a small herd of Katahdin sheep which was for meat, not wool.
Kerry explained that over the last three years they have met many like minded people who convinced them to branch out their business and start selling their farm products to be able to stay sustainable after retirement. They now offer a full range of goat milk products including raw milk, kefir, and several chevre cheese varieties. They have just started with non perishable items including goat milk soap and bath bombs.
Kerry went on to say that their wine started off as a hobby. She had been brewing wine and beer for years and let it go by the wayside in 2014. During COVID-19, the island Kerry and Mike lived on was 30 miles out to sea and had all supplies delivered by boat. This caused difficulty getting basic supplies like towels and toilet paper. People were hoarding even with the quantity restrictions. Kerry started brewing again to trade for items they were unable to get in the store.
She explained they had such great success they were convinced by several of their regular customers to start selling at the local fairs and festivals. Kerry says they now have a decent following. She went on to say that whatever ingredients they can’t grow on the farm, they can import from other states.
They offer farm pick up as well as weekly delivery or pick up in Hinton. People may order through the farm page on Facebook messenger or at kandmfarm2023@gmail.com. It’s hoped a website will be up and running in the near future. A property management business is also offered under k&m management llc .
