Dear Editor,
An issue that all childbearing mothers face is potential health complications, including death. As stated by Healthy People 2030, a program of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, “Women in the United States are more likely to die from childbirth than women living in other developed countries”. Most recent data shows that in 2022 there were 22.3 maternal deaths per 100,000 live births. This number is an increase from the measured 17.4 maternal deaths per 100,000 live births in 2018. These statistics can be changed for the future!
Some health issues don’t arise until sometime during pregnancy, but other health issues may be present before pregnancy begins. It is important to make an appointment with an OBGYN as soon as you find out you may be pregnant to obtain the best healthcare for yourself and your baby.
A licensed OBGYN office will confirm your pregnancy, screen for any health concerns, provide education for healthy habits and necessary health care throughout pregnancy and postpartum. When going to an OBGYN office, be sure to ask what resources are available to you. They will be able to give you information connecting you to programs that you may be eligible for to improve your health during and after your pregnancy. Healthcare is a necessity to all, but especially to pregnant women for the potential health concerns that may arise. If you or anyone you know is pregnant, you are urged to go to a licensed OBGYN office to prevent and intervene in any health complications that may occur. If you are not sure of which office to go to, you can ask your primary care provider for a list of recommendations with locations and contact information.
