Billy Lee Cox

Billy Lee Cox, 89, of Catlettsburg, KY, passed away on October 18, 2024, due to kidney disease and complications related to age.

Born in Loyall, Harlan County, KY, in 1935, to Carrie Gilbert Cox and Walter Smith Cox, Bill graduated from Dryden High School in Lee County, VA. He served six years in the Army, before receiving an honorable discharge and reuniting with his family in Richmond, VA, where he met his wife, Carole.

In 1976, Bill and Carole made Summers County, WV, their permanent home, where he worked in maintenance. He was preceded in death by his parents; and five siblings, Walter Gene Cox, Helen Ward, Phyllis Pike, Peggy Cox, and Richard “Dickie” Cox.

Bill is survived by his wife, Carole Cox; his daughter, Billie Persinger; his stepdaughters, Brenda Braswell, Sheila Green, Tammy Johnson, and Wendy Braswell; and a sister, Sandra Spratley; and a brother, Jerry Cox. He also leaves behind the grandchildren he adored, Miles Persinger, Katie Braswell, Tyler Green, Gerard Green, Kyanna Johnson, Kindra Looney, Raegan Johnson, Stephen Johnson, and John Edward Auville; along with three great-grandchildren.

A celebration of life will be held in the spring at Brooks Baptist Church in Brooks, WV, with ashes to be interred at the Fox Family Cemetery in Brooks. Bill was a humble, gentle man who loved cracking jokes and fixing things. He will be deeply missed.
