Lloyd Gene “Sarge” Ayers, 89, passed away Saturday, June 29, 2024, at his home in Beckley, WV. Born July 26, 1934, in Summers County, WV, he was the youngest of eleven children of Charley Napolean and Sallie Leif Harris Ayers.

Gene’s career was military, serving 20 years in the US Army as a military policeman, with overseas tours in Korea, France, Vietnam twice, and Thailand. He then worked 24 years for the Department of Labor at the National Mine Health and Safety Academy in Beaver, WV, in the maintenance department and as an instructor. Gene was also an auctioneer for 25 years, doing many charity auctions for fire departments, churches, and schools.

He enjoyed the outdoors, camping, hunting, and fishing, but loved taking care of the family farm and having his family come to the farm and enjoy it with him. Gene was a Trustee at Sandstone Missionary Baptist Church and was a member of the Beckley Veterans Group #14 in Beckley, WV.

Besides his parents, he is preceded in death by two sisters, Ruby Kessler and Daisy Walkup; and eight brothers, Charles, Grover, Edward, Fred, Jennings, John, Kenneth, and Robert Ayers.

Gene is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Beatrice Lucille Jarrells Ayers; children, Lloyd Gene Ayers II and wife, Michelle, as well as Mark Shelor Ayers and wife, Kimberly; grandchildren, Ashley Brooke Ayers Acord and husband, Corey, Kyle Shelor Ayers and wife, Taylor, Madison Grace Ayers, and Bryar Gene Ayers; step-grandchildren, Taylor Miles, Chloe Bills, and Caity Bills.

Gene was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, that will be severely missed by all.

As requested, he will be cremated, and his ashes will be buried at the Ayers Family Cemetery in Sandstone, WV; no services will be held.

In lieu of flowers, donations of sympathy can be sent to Beckley VA Volunteer Services, c/o: Beckley Vet Center, Attn: Volunteer Services Office, Beckley VA Medical Center, 200 Veterans Ave., Beckley, WV 25801.
