HINTON W.Va. (Hinton News) – Peace on Earth is the theme of this year’s annual Christmas Walk in Hinton. The walk begins on Saturday, Dec. 9 at 6 p.m. at Ascension Episcopal Church at the corner of Temple and 5th Ave. This will be the 10th year of the Christmas Walk, which has become a beloved way for those in the community to come together as we prepare ourselves in hearts and minds for Christmas.

Organizers of the event released the following statement:

“As we celebrate this season of love and joy, we also recognize the need for peace in this world. Through God’s contact with people on earth in both the Old and the New Testaments, God has offered us this gift of peace. The prophets recognized this gift. Jesus came, teaching about peace. And still today, this gift is offered to us. Our part is to accept and use this gift in our lives.

“On the night of the Christmas Walk, we come together again in faith. Interestingly, the First Methodist, the Presbyterian, the Episcopal Church, the Baptist Church and Brooklyn Methodist were all formed in 1872, holding services together and rotating ministers. The program highlights the fascinating history of these downtown churches.

“Six of Hinton’s downtown, historic churches will participate this year, including Ascension Episcopal Church, the Ministry Place, First United Methodist, First Presbyterian, First Baptist and St Patrick’s Catholic Church. The streets between those churches will be lit with hundreds of candle-lit luminaries. Each church will present a piece of the nativity story and have a short program. This program begins with the prophecy of the coming of Jesus in the Old Testament and ends with the wise men bringing their gifts to the newborn baby. Music will be sung. The churches will be warm and lovely.

“The reception, following the walk, will be in the basement of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, offering drinks to warm you from the chill, favorite Christmas treats and a chance to meet with friends, both old and new.

“Of course, this event is free and open to all. The night is organized through the cooperation of the churches in downtown Hinton and sponsored by the Just Christian organization. If you have questions you can call Nancy at 304.860.9446. If you or your organization would like to help put on luminaries on the day of the walk, also call.

“We sincerely hope you can join us for this night of beauty, mystery and celebration.”
