SUMMERS COUNTY, (Hinton News) – Southern West Virginia (WV) is known for its beautiful rivers, lakes, and waterways, offering locals and tourists alike ample opportunities for water-based activities. As summer approaches and more people head to the water, it’s essential to prioritize safety. Here are some water activity safety tips to ensure a fun and secure experience.

1. Wear a Life Jacket

Regardless of your swimming ability, always wear a U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jacket when participating in water activities such as boating, kayaking, or paddleboarding. In Southern WV, the New River and Gauley River can have strong currents and unpredictable conditions, making it essential to have a life jacket on hand. West Virginia laws require all persons over 13 years old to have a life jacket readily available on a water vessel, while those under 13 must have it on. The National Park Service encourages everyone to wear a life jacket anytime they are in the water. The NPS water safety tips state, “Most drownings in the New River involve people who didn’t plan on being in the water.”

2. Never Swim Alone

Swimming with a buddy is a crucial safety measure. In case of an emergency, having someone nearby can make all the difference. When visiting popular swimming spots like Summersville Lake or Bluestone Lake, make sure to swim with a friend or family member.

3. Be Mindful of

Weather Conditions

West Virginia weather can change rapidly, so it’s essential to stay updated on the latest forecasts. Avoid water activities during thunderstorms, as lightning poses a significant risk to those in or near water. Additionally, heavy rainfall can cause rivers to rise quickly, creating dangerous conditions for swimmers and boaters.

4. Know Your Limits

Whether you’re swimming, boating, or participating in other water activities, it’s crucial to know your limits and not push yourself beyond them. If you’re inexperienced or unsure about your abilities, ask the local park service or the Department of Natural Resources for locations that are good for inexperienced beginners.

5. Learn Basic Water

Rescue Techniques

The American Red Cross offers water safety courses that can equip you with essential skills and knowledge. The Red Cross’s water safety tips include ensuring every family member knows how to swim.

6. Avoid Alcohol

Alcohol and water activities do not mix. Consuming alcohol impairs judgment, balance, and coordination, increasing the risk of accidents. Stay sober when participating in water activities to ensure the safety of yourself and those around you.

7. Respect Local

Rules and Regulations

Southern WV is home to several state parks and recreation areas that have specific rules and regulations in place to ensure the safety of visitors. Familiarize yourself with these guidelines and follow them closely. For example, some areas may have designated swim zones, while others may require permits for certain activities.

8. Enable GPS

Before heading out on a trip down the river, enable GPS locating on your cell phone. This way, if you do find yourself lost or in a bad situation, it will be easier for emergency services personnel to locate you. Be sure to place the phone in a sandwich bag or other sealed container so it is not damaged or disabled by water.

Water activities in Southern West Virginia can be a thrilling and memorable experience. By following these safety tips, you can ensure a fun and secure adventure for yourself and your loved ones. So, gear up, stay safe, and enjoy the beautiful waterways of Southern WV.
